Massage
Manual Lymphatic Drainage
We use this treatment as part of our co-ordinated
nutrition and
detox plans, as well as in its own right. It can be of benefit at every stage of reproduction. It can be used to help prepare the body for
conception, to help support
IVF treatment, and in between
IVF treatments and after a
miscarriage. It's also of value during pregnancy and post-natally, most particularly because it is deeply relaxing and helpful for
stress-relief and sleep quality.
By its name, it may sound like Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) means you are about to have the whole of your lymphatic system drained away, but it is actually a very gentle form of
massage aimed at moving the lymph under the skin. The lymphatic system is an important part of our immune system and is also designed to assist in the removal of waste products from the cells of the body. Unlike the circulation of the blood, there is no pump (the heart); instead the lymphatic system has to rely on muscular movement to assist circulation. The system can become very sluggish and ineffectual, not least because of our sedentary lifestyles and high-sodium diets. A sluggish lymphatic system means that this system of waste disposal is compromised, and the body suffers from a build-up of stagnant lymph.
The lymphatic system also plays a key role in the circulation of hormones. If it is not functioning well, this can delay the circulation of fertility hormones. Lymphatic stasis (which means there is little movement) can also affect the feed-back system of fertility hormones, and as a woman's
fertility cycle relies on this feedback system working effectively, problems can arise. For example, it is the peak
oestrogen level that stimulates the production of luteinizing hormone (LH), which in turn stimulates the release of an egg (ovulation). A good way of enhancing the effectiveness of the lymphatic system during a
detox is through Manual Lymphatic Drainage.
In relation to pre-conception and fertility issues specifically, MLD can help with the following:
- balancing hormones and regulating a woman's periods
- boosting the performance of the immune system
- detoxifying
- relieving fluid congestion
- helping with symptoms of PMS
- aiding digestion and helping with disorders such as IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome
