Sperm motility

This measures the percentage of sperm that are moving. It is also important to have a breakdown of sperm motility as sperm can move in different ways. it is no good having a large number of moving sperm in they are only jiggling on the spot. At least 40% need to be moving in some fashion, and at least 32 per cent should be progressing forward (World Health Organisation, 2009).

Causes of poor motility include:

Increased length of sexual abstinence * defects in the sperm tails * anti-sperm antibodies * infection * oxidative stress * age * weight * lifestyle * zinc deficiency * drugs * varicocoele * heat damage * excessive exercise * anabolic steroids * environmental toxins

There is good news here too, as there is considerable evidence that dietary supplements can help improve sperm motility. We have developed our own premium quality male supplements for just this purpose (Vitamen and Vitamen Boost - click here for more details). And , apart from other changes to your lifestyle, it is often a good idea to see one of our nutritional therapists if you have problems in this area.

Your Zita West midwife or fertility nurse, or our Medical Director will be able to advise on what might be suitable for your individual situation.
