Vital Essence 1 - 90 capsules (1 month's supply)

DOES NOT CONTAIN VITAMIN A

The First Trimester (0 -12 weeks)

The first three months of pregnancy are in many ways the most crucial stage of a baby’s development - the time when all of his or her organs and systems are forming, as well as hands, feet, and limbs. It is now recognised that a mother’s diet immediately before conception and in the first weeks of pregnancy can influence the way that the embryo develops. Investing at this stage in the best nutrition may not only help support your baby's start to life, but also give you a better chance of a healthy pregnancy.

The new formulation of Vital Essence 1 supplies all the micro-nutrients that are most important to meet the demands of early pregnancy, including 400ug of Folic Acid (useful for a whole range of cellular activities, not just for helping to minimise the risk of spina bifida) plus lots of protective ingredients such as Beta Carotene (a safe way to help support your intake of Vitamin A), Copper, Magnesium, Manganese and Zinc, all of which  support normal cell division and help to protect DNA. Take one capsule, three times a day (with food), alongside a good quality diet, to help support the changing demands of your body during the first three months of your pregnancy.

We recommend that it should be taken in conjunction with Vital DHA for maximum benefit to your overall nutrition.

All Zita West products are developed in response to the very latest research and are regularly reviewed and reformulated to remain at the cutting-edge of clinical and nutritional thinking for optimum reproductive health.

Directions For Use

Good News For Our Clients:

As with any supplementation, we strongly recommend that you continue with all our nutritional products for at least three to four months. As you would expect, it can take several months to bring your body back into optimum nutritional balance, plus a sustained effort from then on to keep it that way.

Many of our clients have told us that they find the process of reordering each month a chore, which we can well understand. In response to this we have introduced an Automatic Reordering Service for all our nutritional range.

If you would like to take advantage of this, either tick the box, as indicated, when completing your purchase on our 'Shopping' page or, if you prefer, give our sales line a call on 0800.0480.046, and we'll arrange it for you. We'll then send you a bottle of whatever you've ordered to reach you before your existing supply runs out. We'll only charge your credit card for the new delivery when we have despatched it, just as if you had e.mailed or called us yourself. Whenever you want to amend or cancel the order, simply call us, or send an e.mail to customerservice@zitawestproducts.com, and we'll arrange this for you immediately.

Please state how many weeks you have been pregnant, so we can make sure we send you the right product as your pregnancy develops.

Alternatively, you may prefer to buy a few month's supply in one go. We can now offer a 10% reduction (ex p&p) on all orders of two or more of any of the products from theVital and ReVital Essence range. If you choose to place your order via the web-site, the system will calculate your discount for you automatically.

Don't worry if you order a number of products and then decide not to use any of them; simply return them to us, unopened, and we will be happy to refund what you paid.

Vital Essence 1 - Ingredients and their Benefits

  • Beta Carotene – helps protect, safely, against Vitamin A deficiency. Supports normal cell differentiation, normal function of the immune system as well as the normal metabolism of Iron
  • Biotin – essential for metabolising most macronutrients as well as for the normal functioning of the nervous system. The concentration of Biotin in breast milk is 15 times higher than in the mother’s blood, which suggests that Biotin may be very important for a baby’s growth and development.
  • Calcium – needed initially for the development of the nervous system and strong healthy bones and teeth. The foetus accumulates Calcium rapidly in the first trimester so it is important to have a good maternal store. Vegetarian and vegan mothers and those under 18 need to be especially careful to maintain healthy levels.
  • Choline - an essential nutrient required by the body to make important compounds necessary for healthy cell membranes. Demand for choline during pregnancy is very high due to its transfer from the mother to the foetus.
  • Coenzyme Q10 - helps deliver extra cellular energy.
  • Folic Acid - essential during the rapid growth and cell division of the first trimester (the neural tube closes on days 26-27 in the life of the embryo). Neural tube defects such as spina bifida are related to Folic Acid deficiency. Supplementation may be helpful as good supplies can be hard to supply from food alone. Also important for the normal functioning of the immune system and normal maternal tissue growth throughout pregnancy. The Department of Health recommends that all pregnant women supplement their diets with Folic Acid during the first trimester of pregnancy.
  • Fruit extracts - (pomegranate and grapeskin). Added, along with Alpha-Lipoic Acid and N-Acetyl Cysteine, to provide a broader spectrum of anti-oxidants.
  • Iodine - an essential micro-nutrient in the human diet, most particularly as a component of thyroid hormones, which play a vital role in the regulation of metabolic processes such as growth and energy expenditure.
  • Iron - makes haemoglobin, the substance which carries oxygen in the blood. Women can have low Iron status entering pregnancy because of menstrual blood loss. A common symptom of deficiency is pica, a craving for strange foods. Iron is not absorbed well without Vitamin C and taking it on its own can lead to the loss of other essential minerals. Also important for normal function of the immune system, normal cognitive function and normal cell division. Vital Essence 1 will help to build the maternal store from the beginning of pregnancy.
  • Magnesium - essential for energy production, for normal neuro-transmission and for many major metabolic reactions. Few enzymes (the protein molecules which carry out the DNA’s instructions in the body) can work without it. Also important for normal synthesis of proteins as well as healthy bones and teeth.
  • Selenium - a powerful antioxidant, especially important to help protect maternal DNA, proteins and lipids from oxidative damage. Also important for the the normal functioning of the mother's immune and thyroid systems.
  • Vitamin C  - added to help with the absorption of non-haem iron. Also helps to protect maternal DNA and supports the normal function of the nervous system and immune system.
  • Vitamin D  - important to help maintain a healthy inflammatory response and the normal functioning of the immune system. The Department of Health now recommends that all women should consider supplementing with Vitamin D during pregnancy. Recent research from our Clinic suggests that over half of all women who have their Vitamin D status tested are deficient.
  • Vitamin E  - essential for metabolism and the development of the nervous system.
  • Zinc - Vitally important for male and female reproductive health. Essential for many of the body’s functions, including normal cell division. Also supports normal cognitive function and the normal metabolism of Fatty Acids. Zinc deficiency is often found in women with fertility problems and in long-term users of the contraceptive pill.

My GP says if I am eating a good diet, I do not need to take vitamins?

In our experience, even if you have a healthy diet - which many people don't these days, given missed, hurried or convenience meals -  growing numbers of mothers-to-be want the added reassurance of knowing they are getting all the most important vitamins and minerals they need. Not least because intensive food production and processing has stripped many foods of a lot of their nourishment. In our opinion, a good multi vitamin and mineral supplement is essential during pregnancy, if only as an insurance policy.

Is it OK to keep on taking Vital Essence 1 when I am into the 2nd Trimester?

It's perfectly fine to keep on using Vital Essence 1 for a few weeks after the end of the 1st trimester, for example to finish off a bottle that you have only just started. The differences in the formulation of Vital Essence 2 are not huge, and have just been made in order to fine-tune the formulation to make it as specific as possible to the particular needs of your body as you move into this middle stage of pregnancy.

What is "RDA" and why are so many of the ingredients in Vital Essence 1 higher than 100%?

"RDA" is an abbreviation of "Recommended Daily Allowance." The RDA was devised by the Dept of Health in the UK in 1979 to provide guidance on the intake of a limited number of specific vitamins and minerals that an average adult should have daily in order to avoid a deficiency that may lead to disease or general ill-health. Whereas this was, and remains, a useful benchmark for judging the contribution that any supplement may make to reaching those minimum requirements, it wasn't intended to represent an indication of optimum intake. You will probably have noticed that many supplements, particularly premium priced ones such as our own, contain daily levels that are frequently many times higher than the RDA, sometimes substantially so. This is because the vitamins and minerals concerned have been set at therapeutic levels in an attempt to boost the body's store of the nutrients concerned, often for a particular and limited period of time, the need for which can of course vary depending on factors such as general health, age etc. It is universally recognised that pregnancy, and preparing for pregnancy, for example, benefit from special attention to nutrition on the part of both partners. All of the formulations within the Zita West range are well within the Government's guidelines for what represents the upper safe limit (USL) for long term daily supplementation of any given nutrient.
