Acupuncture has a long and successful history in reproductive medicine. It can be used to help boost fertility and to prepare the body for conception and pregnancy, as well as to relieve some of the more common problems women can encounter following the birth, such as backache or exhaustion. It can also be used to improve the chances of IVF success (see below).
Underlying conditions such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Endometriosis and irregular cyles can be treated with Acupuncuture. It’s also good for relieving stress (which can be adverse for both fertility and pregnancy) as well as balancing female hormones (hormonal imbalance is a frequent contributor to fertility problems) and increasing the flow of blood to the reproductive organs. It can help with male fertility issues too.
Personally developed by Zita West, all the Clinic's acupuncture protocols incorporate a five element approach (which can help on an emotional level), integrated with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Acupuncture and IVF
Research shows how valuable having acupuncture pre and post embryo transfer, in particular, can be. A recent meta-analysis (Manheimer E), published by the British Medical Journal in February 2008, suggests that women undergoing IVF, who also have acupuncture on the day of embryo transfer, have a substantially higher chance of conceiving than those who have no acupuncture.
This is supported by our own results. The most recent audit of our own ongoing success rates since late 2006 has shown that having acupuncture at our clinic pre and post embryo transfer resulted in a mean pregnancy rate per IVF cycle of almost 60%, more than 50% higher than the rate achieved by the highest ranked IVF clinic in the UK (based on latest published HFEA (Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority) data).
