Consultations are with Anita O’Neill

Anita O'Neill

Anita O Neill has been doing clinics in Dublin for the last four years and patients come to see her from all over the country. Although couples come to see her for a variety of reasons the vast majority simply want an independent expert opinion on where they are at with regards to their fertility, followed by sound advice as to what their next steps should be. The three main groups of women she sees are;

                  • Couples who are trying naturally and want to just make sure that they are ‘ticking all the boxes’. This holistic approach to looking at their fertility might include some education on fertility awareness, nutrition, managing stress and expectations. Once they have a plan to work with so many of these couples get pregnant and we may never see them again.
                  • Couples who have been trying naturally for some time and although their fertility knowledge is very good, they are ‘stuck’ and they do not know what their next steps should be. They want to discuss whether they need assisted fertility and if so what their options are and advice on the best clinics to go to.
                  • Couples who have a history of failed IVF cycles. Even if it’s only one failed cycle these couples want to understand in detail why it might have failed, what their next options are and what they can do to help improve their success in another cycle. They want guidance on what questions to be asking their clinic, what additional tests if any that they should be having. Some couples with recurrent IVF failure or recurrent miscarriage will want to consider reproductive immunology investigations and treatments, an area which The Zita West Clinic specialises in.

Anita often only needs to see couples once and they are sorted but for many couples she is a life line of support, understanding, knowledge and advice during what can be a long and painful fertility journey.

The fact that Anita is Irish herself, she has a deep understanding of what it means to be struggling to have a baby in Ireland and knows how best to utilise the systems, service and clinics available in Ireland today.

Just decided to try for a baby?

This personalised 1 hour session is exactly what you and your partner will need to give you and your baby the best possible start.

A comprehensive, one-off, consultation with one of our consultant midwives or fertility nurses, each session is designed to check out all the important medical and lifestyle aspects of you and your partner’s reproductive health and to set you off on the best possible path towards the best possible pregnancy.

The Better You Prepare, The Better The Outcome is Likely to Be

Research suggests that the healthier and more vital both partners are immediately prior to the conception, and the better prepared they are in body and mind, the better the ensuing pregnancy is likely to be, and the healthier and brighter your baby can be too.

Based on your answers to a detailed pre-appointment questionnaire, one of our consultant midwives, or our fertility nurse, will review every important aspect of you and your partners’ reproductive health and fertility history in order to help identify possible adverse factors and to suggest ways in which to help put them right.

This may reveal the need for further medical examinations and tests to investigate possible physical problems. Or, more likely, areas of possible weakness in your reproductive health which can be addressed by improving such things as your nutrition, modifying certain aspects of your lifestyle, stimulating your reproductive system, dealing with long-standing complaints such as food intolerances or adrenal or thyroid deficiencies, or relieving anxiety and stress.

Check out Your Reproductive Status and How to Improve It

For most couples, this, combined with one of our terrific “Nutritional Healthchecks”, may be all the help you’ll need. You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of the kind of reproductive shape you and your partner are in, and a clear action plan on how to fine tune yourselves, physically and mentally, to the benefit of your pregnancy and the long term benefit of your baby.

Planning an assisted conception?

Diet and nutrition, in particular, has a critical influence on the workings of the male and female reproductive systems, and a pro-active approach to both these factors is often a central part of our approach to helping you improve your chances of IVF success.

Many of our clients have had unsuccessful IVF previously and find that our initial consultation provides them with a renewed sense of hope and empowerment.

Unless you have already received specific dietary and nutritional advice elsewhere, we will nearly always recommend that both partners see one of our specialist nutritional therapists for a “Nutritional Healthcheck”, as part of the programme of support.

Zita West Nutritional Healthchecks (Click for details)

Good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle are central to the Clinic’s approach to boosting male and female fertility and to preparing properly for conception and pregnancy. Research shows how critical a good diet, full of the right nutrients, can be to your fertility and your pregnancy, as well as the long term health and potential of your baby.
We highly recommend that all couples who can afford it get their nutritional status checked out, particularly if they are having problems conceiving.

Please note: We are only able to offer “Nutritional Healthchecks” as telephone or Skype consultations with one of our London based nutritional therapists, for the moment.

Research shows how critical a good diet, full of the right nutrients, can be to your fertility, and to the pregnancy that hopefully follows. Getting your diet and lifestyle working in harmony with your body, rather than against it, as is so often the case, can really make a difference.
It’s all too easy to end up under-nourished without really noticing. So much of the food we eat these days is highly processed and factory farmed. And our rushed and stressful lifestyles don’t help either. Everyone knows that smoking and alcohol are bad for reproductive health, but stress can be just as great a problem, as it depletes our bodies of vital nutrients.

7 Basic Principles

There are seven basic principles we work to at the Clinic to help to restore or enhance fertility and prepare for conception, in addition to fixing your diet per se:

  1. Improving the workings of the digestive system so that it is able to better absorb vital nutrients from food
  2. Restoring blood sugar balance for good hormonal control (unbalanced hormones can be a common problem for fertility)
  3. Restoring the acid/alkaline balance in the body (in our experience many of the male and female fertility problems we see are contributed to by over-acidity in the body)
  4. Assessing the lifestyle changes necessary to ensure you minimize environmental hormone-disrupters (such as over the counter medication, alcohol, cigarettes, MSG, aspartame etc) which can have an adverse effect on fertility by depleting the body of essential nutrients
  5. Reducing stress – which has a powerful effect on the digestive system
  6. Looking at weight (being over or underweight can be an issue)
  7. Immune issues
