Are you more fertile after a miscarriage?

Posted on

It's estimated that about 1 in 5 pregnancies in the UK end in miscarriage, which can be an incredibly difficult experience both emotionally and physically. It's completely understandable to be eager to try conceiving again after a pregnancy loss. However, it's vital to allow yourself time to recover before trying to get pregnant again.

Should You Try to Get Pregnant Again Right Away?

Some studies have suggested that women may be more fertile for a short period of time after a miscarriage. This may be due to higher levels of fertility hormones like oestrogen and hCG directly after a pregnancy loss. However, other studies have shown no difference in fertility rates after miscarriage compared to the general population.

It's important not to put pressure on yourself to start trying again before you feel ready. Give yourself time to physically and emotionally heal. Your doctor can advise you on when your body has recovered enough to try conceiving again.

Looking After Yourself

Experiencing a miscarriage can be devastating. Be kind to yourself and allow yourself to grieve. Getting support from your partner, family and friends can be very helpful. Consider speaking to a counsellor if you are struggling with anxiety, depression or guilt after your loss.

It's also vital to take care of your physical health. Follow a balanced diet, exercise regularly, reduce stress, and get plenty of rest. Your GP can check for any underlying conditions that may affect your fertility.

When to Seek Help

Most doctors recommend waiting at least 1-3 normal menstrual cycles after a miscarriage before trying to conceive again. However, speak to your GP if you experience any of the following:

  • No period after 6 weeks
  • Prolonged heavy bleeding
  • Fever or chills
  • Severe pain

This may indicate an infection or another complication requiring medical care.

Give your body and mind time to heal after a pregnancy loss. While some research suggests a short-term boost in fertility, there is no need to rush into conceiving again before you feel emotionally and physically ready. Prioritise your health and wellbeing, and speak to your doctor about when to try again.
