Folate, also known as Vitamin B9, is a water-soluble vitamin important for numerous bodily functions. Its synthetic form, folic acid, is often used in supplements and fortified foods.

Folate and Fertility

Preconception Health: Adequate folate levels are essential before conception. Folate helps in the development of the neural tube, which becomes the baby's brain and spinal cord. 

Ovulation Support: Folate contributes to the proper functioning of the reproductive system. It supports regular ovulation and improves the chances of conception.

Sperm Quality: In men, folate is important for sperm health. It is associated with improved sperm count and motility, as well as reduced sperm DNA damage. 

Pregnancy Outcomes: Sufficient folate intake has been linked to a lower risk of miscarriage, preterm birth, and other pregnancy complications. It supports the growth and development of the foetus throughout pregnancy.

Sources of Folate

Fruit and Veg: Legumes, leafy greens, oranges, papayas, avocados, asparagus and beetroot are all great sources of folate.

Other food sources: Beef liver is exceptionally rich in folate, eggs and sunflower seeds are also packed with folate.

Fortified foods: Fortified cereals, grains and bread often contain sources of folic acid.

Folic acid supplements: Folic acid is available in various supplement forms, from standalone folic acid pills to multivitamins that include folic acid.
